1 Caramel
July 15, 2009
On a hot and busy weekday afternoon in Singapore, my day was brightened up by a beautifully designed cafe along Handy Road – 1 Caramel @ The Luxe (Art Museum), located right next to The Cathay.
I was adsolutely seduced by the gorgeous cakes on display…take a look for yourself =)

Tiered cakes that would have made my 21st birthday even more perfect!

National Day Cup Cakes!

Red Velvet Cake…

And so much more!
The clever combination of refrigerator and glass cabinet was an art on its own. The massive window display gave the cafe a slight element of grandeur. The food? We tried the Lychee Rose and this molten chocolate cake with ice-cream dessert (can’t remember the exact name). Here are the pics…

In our opinion, the cakes were uniquely created and the presentation was pretty. The taste unfortunately does not quite match up to the outlook and the price however is slightly on the steep side (Most of the cakes were going at $7.50 per slice). Nevertheless, with such an attractive setting, I would definitely give this cafe a return visit!
For parties, we estimate a capacity of around 60 (Indoors and outdoors seating). You might even be able to extend the area to include the Luxe Art Museum itself! Imagine having a party in a museum! Now that’s something new =)

Ian’s 21st Birthday Party at Durty Nellys
July 12, 2009
If there is one common thing in all the birthday parties that I have attended, it is that they are all held at night. Ian’s 21st celebration was a lunch party. I have attended wedding lunches but birthday lunch?? Now that’s a first for me =)
The main reason for holding it in the afternoon was to cater to his family, who formed the majority of his guests. Still, the celebration of manhood can never do without some alcohol, or at least some relation to it. Thus his decision to have it at Durty Nellys, an Irish Pub conveniently located @ Marina Square.

The interior design of the pub has a slight element of authentic Irish Pub aura, creating a laid back feel. An ideal place to chill with friends, temporarily taking you away from the hustle and bustle of Singapore. On this day, family was top priority and the presence of low chairs made it convenient for children and the elderly.
Lunch consisted of sandwiches, pies and other finger food…a simple yet delicious affair, the Irish way…

Tuna Sandwich…my favourite =)

Corned Beef Sandwich

Mini Guiness & Steak Pies

Sausage Rolls

Fish Fillet

Chicken Fillet

Roasted Potatoes

What’s a birthday without a birthday cake?

And the 21st century way of cutting cake =p
Next up was taboo with friends…

and a short “performance” from Jay.
Some of us got high from the afternoon beer, but that certainly did not stop us from making new friends…

Happy 21st Ian!!
Hog’s Breath Cafe
July 9, 2009

I remember 2 years back where my brother was keen on holding his 21st Birthday Party @ Hog’s Breath CHIJMES, I can’t exactly remember why we didn’t and chose Mel’s place in the end but… finally after 2 years, I’ve tried it! On my birthday itself!

Sorry for the dark pictures and the lack of pictures of the place.
When you enter the restaurant, it’s really nice to be greeted by a bunch of friendly staff, and to the right, it is their bar where drinks are served.

Generally it has a laidback environment, really suitable for group celebrations – 21st birthdays, 18th birthdays, 16th birthday parties to be held. We were given this area which can hold approx 40 people.
What’s more fantastic, is the food!

Finger Food Combo @ $19.50 ++
One combo is enough to share between 3 – 4 people, and I absolutely loved the potato skin! Crispy on the outside, soft in the inside. But I didn’t really fancy the wings though, thought it was too spicy for my liking, but the taste was neutralised by the sauces that were provided.

300g Garlic Mushroom Prime Steak @ $35.50 ++
Jasmine and I shared a Garlic Mushroom Prime Steak, and it was absolutely fantastic. The fries remind me very much of the very-much-missed A&W curly fries (someone bring back A&W into SG pls!) and the steak was so tender!

Full BBQ PorkRib @ $29.50 ++
Victor ordered Pork Ribs, and it was really good as well! The meat is just soft enough, unlike most restaurants where you take forever to finish chewing.

Tex-Mex Combo @ $27.50 ++
The steak in general are all really good, and their servings are really generous, value for money! But there’s this curry spring roll at the side we all didn’t exactly fancy, it pretty out of place. It’s like a bad imitation of curry puffs!

Complimentary Birthday Mud Cake
The entire bill came up to about $238.75 for 8 pax, and they had a UOB 15% discount! Which makes eating even happier!

If I’m not wrong, they have packages catered for parties and given that they have different rooms, you can even have the entire room to yourself to hold your celebrations. You can have a laidback theme with cowboy hats (I don’t know why but they remind me of things like this…) Or since they have soooo many car plates have a Traffic Light party! I came across this event where Traffic Light was his theme:-

With the guests coming in:-
Red- if you’re attached hence unavailable
Green-if you’re single, no strings attached
Amber- if you’re just simply complicated
TRAFFIC SUMMON WILL BE ISSUED TO THOSE WHO FAIL TO DRESS UP!
How interesting! There are even assigned drivers @ the party to fetch people in and out of the party area, so that they don’t have to walk out themselves.
Back to Hog’s breath, yeah…
Whats more, the servings are really generous so no worries about your guests being hungry!
Party World KTV
July 9, 2009
After dinner at Hog’s Breath was KTV, but not the usual one that we have at Singapore Island Country Club, because it closes at 12mn. I am still in the search for a nice KTV place, where people can hang out till late!

The KTV room was pretty spacious for all the 8 of us, but I thought the KTV system was really bad & the seats weren’t really comfortable.

But it’s a good hangout place to chill after you have your meals with your friends, and especially for my friends who love to sing, KTV is an ideal place!
I remember having my 15th Birthday at this very Party World KTV, that was quite a long time ago!
But I’m not very impressed with the drinks, it was bad and overpriced (TMD, my hot milo is bloody $8.50!)
I’m gonna hunt down nice KTVs with reasonable drinks!
7atenine
July 8, 2009

After the smashing 21st Birthday Party at Paulaner, I opted for a cosy and classy affair with the girls, Kelvin, Wah Man and Wei Jie on the eve of my 21st Birthday.
Venue for the special evening: 7atenine @ Esplanade Mall.

Victor and I loved the ambience - The blue, white and silver setting, along with mirrors and glass display brought out the elegance of the restaurant, while the beautiful shimmery curtains gave us much treaured privacy. Classy, yet cosy indeed.

A perfect place for couples, also just as good for small group gatherings.
The food? Generally a fusion of East and West. Spoilt for choice, we went for their Dinner Unlimited @ $57++ per pax. In this promotion, up to 20 tapas sized dishes will be served followed by our choice of main course. All the dishes are “surprise menu” from the chef and the best part is, we get to re-order our preferred ones!
I’ll let the pictures do the talking =)
The starters…

I love the beef roll on hot stone! The beef is really tender and what’s more, you can control the doneness of the beef by leaving it on the stone longer for well done. Cool!

A salmon & potato combination. The potato at the bottom reminds me of the usual potato salad, but somehow it tasted different. Much nicer than usual!

The sizzling wings…Adsolutely awesome when eaten with the sauce!

The golden mushroom & risotto – The golden mushroom was slightly salty, so you need to eat it with the risotto to neutralise the taste.

I’m a fan of sashimi, so I love this tuna dish in particular! The tuna is fresh, the portion just right!

Salmon & Asparagus

Wagyu Beef – FANTASTICKSSSS
The Mains…
I like how the mains were smaller portions since we opted for dinner unlimited (which means our stomach hardly has any space left after all the unlimited tapas)

Baked Hokkaido Scallops

The Desserts
Didn’t really fancy the desserts though, it just wasn’t my kind of dessert, but the ice creams were damn good!

The lime sorbet was perfect for our very full and growing stomachs.
I’m not a food guru, so I can’t comment the texture etc etc, but just for my normal tastebuds, I love the food
Finally, I really appreciate the chef preparing this complimentary dessert for my birthday!

And of course, the usuals

And did I tell you what I received?!?!

21 eggs.
Which leads back to an old story I have with our favourite Weijie:-

Overall a great dining experience for me and my pals! The ambience was fantastic without a doubt, the food…well, we liked some, while others…not as much. If there is one particular dish that I will never forget, it shall be the Wagyu Beef…Adsolutely awesome!
They do functions for people as well. Here are some figures I got from their website.
Seating Capacity:
indoor 36 pax
dining deck 60 pax
passageway 28 pax
chillout deck 75 pax
The outdoor area peeks out to an overview of the Singapore River – its pretty windy in the evening so fret not about your guests feeling hot!
However, I just thought it isn’t so suitable for parties which has really young kids and traditional grandparents around. The food is good, but not sure about the price for parties though.
Nevertheless, their service is really good (thumbs up!).
Love the staff, love the ambience, love the place!

The Ideal Venue
July 6, 2009
Although the party @ Paulaner has already ended, I’m still suffering from withdrawal effects of the numerous days searching the birthday venue, etc.. I guess what’s important about a 21st Birthday Party Venue is…
1) Convenience. Originally I was keen on holding it at Sentosa, but getting there is really troublesome – the entrance fees, hassle of traveling in and out etc.. Already acts as a deterrent to people going your party. Unless your friends all drive, stick to places which are slightly more centralised – It makes the lives of your friends much easier (esp when midnight cab fares are crazy!)
2) The venue allows the no. of people that you have invited to move around freely. Unless your guests didn’t RSVP (So it is always important to tell the restaurant people your expected number and more importantly, GUESTS – to RSVP!), it is important that they have room to move around, mingle and socalise. Sometimes when the venue tend to get overcrowded, please do ensure that your guests have at least somewhere to sit – Make the seating arrangements such that the people they know are sitting together – to prevent awkwardness.
3) Food. It’s always good to ensure that your guests has enough to eat and drink – They don’t go to your party to starve! Try to remember who’s what – E.g. This person doesn’t eat pork, this person is a fish-vegetarian – And try to order the food accordingly to at least make sure that the guests has something to eat. Your guests will greatly appreciate your thoughtfulness towards this.
And all these, applies to if you are inviting a large group of people to your party.
Thanks :)

Vanessa’s Independent 21st Party

Programmes For The Night
July 1, 2009
We’ve been to parties, and often sometimes we often end up feeling out of place, weird, awkward, programless, boring etc… So we’re trying to make this as unique as possible, but more importantly, you guys to feel comfortable
We’ve invited Vanessa’s very talented and gorgeous friends – Dominic and Wan Hua to sing for us on her special day!
Dominic and Vanessa have been friends since they were HOLY PRIMARY SIX, Wan Hua and Vanessa since Secondary School days… I guess that’s what makes this celebration really special, since they grew up (almost) together.

- Dominic Wong
Check him out at http://www.musicmovement.com.sg/artistes_Dominic.htm
And thanks to our ever-resourceful Wan Hua – She was the one who got us the deal at Paulaner! Cheerios!

See you guys at the PARTY!
